Northern Development and Mines Minister and Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci is today applauding Vale for announcing what it is calling the largest environmental investment inOntario’s history.
Today Vale announced it will invest $2 billion to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions at Vale’sSudburysmelter by 70 per cent. An estimated 1,300 jobs are attached to the announcement.
“Mining is a key part of Sudbury’s cultural identity and plays an important role in the local economy,” says Bartolucci. “That being said, the health of our children and grandchildren are a key priority for our community and that’s top of mind for me today as I applaud this announcement.”
Bartolucci says today’s announcement is in keeping with the McGuinty government’s strong, long-standing efforts to ensure a cleaner environment, and expects to create over a thousand jobs.
“Today’s announcement is indicative of the modern reality that we don’t have to sacrifice our mining economy for the environment and vice versa,” concludes Bartolucci. “I look forward to details of this exciting project and how we can work together to support its success.”
